Week Before Oktoberfest Tour
Congratulations!  You've made a decision to join our September 2022 Munich & Bamberg Brewery Tour and experience the ultimate beer-lover, bucket-list beercation with us.  And now you're thinking about extending your fun by visiting Oktoberfest München before heading home.  Great idea!  Below is some helpful information for making your time at Oktoberfest the best possible experience.  Oktoberfest 2020 was unfortunately cancelled, but if you're wondering what Oktoberfest 2019 was like, check out the News section of the official Oktoberfest site for all of the highlights.

Dates:  In 2022, Oktoberfest München starts on Saturday, Sept. 17th so we've scheduled our Week Before Oktoberfest 2022 Tour to conclude the day before (Sept. 16th) Oktoberfest kicks-off.  This allows you to explore Bavaria on our tour and then attend the largest Oktoberfest in the world before heading home!

RECOMMENDATIONS:  By far, the craziest time to visit Oktoberfest is on opening day, which is always on a Saturday.  For example, in 2019, 1,000,000 visitors attended on opening day - out of a total 6.3 million for the entire event.

Oktoberfest is an amazingly fun experience on any day and one you'll never forget!  But unless your patience is unlimited, it's best to not plan on getting inside the tents on opening day.  Therefore, we suggest the following approach if you want to attend the event after our September 2022 Munich & Bamberg Brewery Tour.

Saturday After Our Tour:
  1. Return to Munich by train (2 hours from Bamberg) and enjoy one of the liveliest Saturdays of the year in the city center.  You'll feel the excitement in the air and you'll see more Lederhosen and Dirndls than normal as everyone seems to be ready for Oktoberfest!
  2. You'll probably want to take a walk (about 1/2 mile from the Munich train station) or take the U-Bahn (15-20 minutes) out to the Theresienwiese, the site of Oktoberfest.  In addition to simply absorbing the mind-blowing scene, you can enjoy a few beers at one of the biergartens outside of the tents.  Plus, the festival grounds boasts a very large carnival RIDE area that's a lot of fun to check out!
Sunday After Our Tour:  At this point, there's nothing holding you back from heading into one of the tents for the experience of a lifetime!  There are basically two ways to experience Oktoberfest:
  1. On Your Own:  Head over to the Theresienwiese on your own and see what tents have open seating.  Get there early!  On the Sunday after opening day, it can still be difficult getting into tents as the opening weekend excitement is still high, but some of tents have attendants inside who can help you find a place to sit.  If not, just walk around the floor (sides and balconies are usually reserved) and if you see a couple spots at a table, ask politely if you may join them and most likely you'll be welcomed into the group.
  2. Make a Reservation:  To avoid the potential hassles of finding a table, make a reservation for a specific time (and table) to go into one of the tents.  If there's only two of you, this isn't really necessary, however if you have a larger group or if you'd rather avoid the "stress" of finding a place inside one of the tents, making a reservation can be worth the investment.  Contact Us if you'd like more information about making reservations.

IMPORTANT!
  • Hotels get booked up well in advance during Oktoberfest.  So if you plan to attend, book your room(s) as soon as possible.  A year ahead is not too early to make hotel reservations.
  • Hotel rates in Munich are significantly higher during Oktoberfest, so depending on your budget, you may want to book a room just outside the city center and away from the fair grounds.  If interested, Contact Us and we can suggest a few hotels that are just outside the city center but easily accessed via the S or U-Bahn systems.
