Apply Early: In most of Europe, the only document a U.S. citizen needs to enter is a passport. U.S. passports are good for 10 years and cost $135. For details and the location of the nearest passport application facility, see the U.S. State Department’s travel site or call 877-487-2778.
Processing time varies although a six-week wait is common. The current wait time is posted on the State Department website. One or two weeks after you apply, you can check online for the status of your passport application and its estimated arrival date.
Make Copies: You should make copies of your passports (and credit cards, ATM cards, identification and medical cards, etc.) for each person and carry a copy of both persons’ information in each person’s suitcase. It’s a lot easier to report/replace lost or stolen items when you have of all information at your fingertips.
