German Brewery Directory - Munich, Andechs, Bamberg, Kelheim & Bavaria

Kloster Andechs Logo
Kloster Andechs:  The modern day view may find it unusual that a monastery brews beer. Yet this can be explained more easily when we take a look at the history of monasteries.  In former times, the brewing of beer, just like the baking of bread for example, was part of the daily household chores. This was true above all among the more rural cultures in the south of Germany. Beer was brewed either for own consumption at home or jointly in the village brewery.

For almost 500 years the monks kept brewing their beer right in the Augustinian monastery - selling it in their, among the people of Munich, ever so popular "Klosterschenke" (monastery tavern).
Privatbrauerei Ayinger:  Beer in Bavaria has had an exceptionally high value since time immemorial. It is not just the proverbial “liquid bread” alone, but rather also the social “cement” of our culture, in which values such as conviviality, community, honesty, reliability and solidarity with the homeland play a major role. The deep roots in our region, continuously deepened over generations, form the nutrient base of the Ayinger Brewery.
