"There is no agreed definition of what constitutes a winter beer, but there are common characteristics that drinkers have come to expect."

How America’s beer culture is a tradition steeped in German history and immigration
Introduction: In spite of our passion for German beer styles, it's the communal side of German beer culture that first got us hooked. Picture yourself sitting in a Bavarian beer garden under the shade of tall Chestnut trees on a warm summer afternoon, sipping cold beer while hearing children play and enjoying conversations with your friends. Beer naturally lowers our social inhibitions and allows us to make new friends at our shared table, some of which may become friends for life. Once you've done this we think you'll be hooked as well!
"It wasn’t until immigration to the United States accelerated in the mid-1800s, particularly from Germany, that the American beer industry really started to take off as any sort of commercial enterprise."
"German immigrants brought their beer culture to the U.S., but two elements proved especially influential. The first was the lager style."
"The second element of German beer culture that the U.S. absorbed and embraced was the communal side of beer drinking. In Germany, biergartens are outdoor gathering places where people of all ages are welcome to relax and enjoy each other’s company." © Copyright 2021 NWI Times

Belgian Beers Have Been Around for Centuries, But Can They Survive the IPA Era?
Introduction: There are plenty of well-made IPAs available, but names like "Apocalypse Cow" from 3 Floyds Brewing, we gotta believe the Belgians have an edge when it comes to which will outlive the other. For example, the Abbey of St-Remy was founded in 1230 and the monastery brewery, Trappistes Rochefort, started brewing around 1595. Nothing, including wars and pandemics, seems have diminished their popularity yet?
"In Belgium, monks and nuns have brewed beer for centuries. Their traditions have survived brutalities of warfare many times over and even withstood Roman emperors who disdained beer, favoring wine instead.
"But can these ancient brews endure the contemporary craft beer community’s obsession with hops and all things India Pale Ale (IPA)? With their nuanced sweetness, monastic Belgian beers are a distinctly Old-World antithesis to boldly hopped, modern styles." COPYRIGHT ©2021 WINE ENTHUSIAST MAGAZINE. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

How one St. Louis brewery has shaped the German-American beer revolution
Introduction: This is an interesting read, especially if you're a German beer lover. We'd say this warrants a trip to St. Louis, or with Original Gravity Tours to Hallertau in northern Bavaria!
"A magnet for German immigrants in the 1800s, St. Louis retains much of its Old World heritage today — in the culture and in the beer. A German-American named George Schneider launched the Bavarian Brewery in St. Louis in 1852; another pair of German immigrants, Eberhard Anheuser and Adolphus Busch, would build that business into the empire known today as Anheuser-Busch.
"Ask any beer enthusiast in St. Louis where to grab a pint and you’ll probably get directions to one of Urban Chestnut Brewing Company’s two locations,...
"Situated in Hallertau, just a stone’s throw from where farmers cultivate the hops that drive many Urban Chestnut beers, the Wolnzach brewery has put the company to a true test." © Copyright 2021 Feast and Field,

What Is a Hefeweizen?
Introduction: Schneider Weisse is far and away our favorite wheat beer, in particular Schneider Aventinus and Hopfenweisse! If you can find these in your neighborhood, pick a few up and you'll enjoy what Bavarians have been enjoying since 1872! Or join one of our tours and we'll stop at the Schneider Weisse brewery for a guided tasting of their line-up.
"This history of hefeweizens has roots dating back hundreds of years in Germany. Originating in the 1520s in Bavaria, Germany, hefeweizens are a type of weissbier (“white beer”) also known as weizenbier (“wheat beer”).
"Popularity of weizenbiers grew, but by the late 18th century traditional dark lagers had eclipsed the style. By 1812 only two breweries in Bavaria still made weizenbier and in 1856 the Wittelbachs sold their declining brewing rights to Georg I. Schneider; he became the first commoner granted the right to brew wheat beer. The brewery G. Schneider & Sohn started production of Schneider Weisse in September of 1872.

Smoked beer and medieval history make Bamberg a memorable destination
Introduction: Tiny Bamberg (population roughly 78,000) and the surrounding Upper Franconian countryside is home to the most breweries per capita of anywhere in the world! It's almost the home to two of the few original smoked beer breweries in the world - Schlenkerla and Brauerei Spezial. Before the invention of the indirect heat kiln all beer was "smoked" because the malts were dried over open wood fires. Today very few breweries brew any smoked beer at all, but only Schlenkerla and Spezial use traditional methods in brewing their smoked beer.
"Germany’s fame as the land of beer has been safely established for hundreds of years. But one town in particular is famous for a very special brew that attracts visitors from far and wide.
"The smoked malt results in a very distinctive taste, which is best sampled at Bamberg’s historic Schlenkerla brewery. It’s located directly beneath the cathedral, which opens for visitors as early as 9:30 a.m. At the brewery tavern, the beer is tapped directly from wooden barrels in keeping with an old tradition." © 2021 Stars and Stripes. Germany's Oktoberfest canceled again in 2021 due to coronavirus
Introduction: Oktoberfest has been held every year since 1810 except for fourteen years when it was cancelled due to war (Napoleonic, Austro-Prussian, WWI and WWII) or disease (Cholera (twice) and now Coronavirus). We are indeed living through historic times, but let's hope all of this behind us by 2022.
"The decision was made by Bavarian state Premier Markus Söder and Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter. Söder said that Oktoberfest is the "most global" festival there is, and that the pandemic is not yet under enough control to allow people from all over the world to gather in tents.
"In the classic beer tents at the big festivals, social distancing, masks and other measures are practically impossible to implement," Söder said."
"Oktoberfest boss Clemens Baumgärtner said the move was "completely correct not only out of consideration for the health of the visitors, but also out of consideration for the good reputation of the Munich Oktoberfest as a high-quality, safe festival." He predicted that the 2022 event will be "very, very well attended because people are hungry and thirsty." © 2021 Deutsche Welle

How a German Brewery Saved 1,500 Gallons of Beer That Were About to Expire
Introduction: Years ago, there was a strong connection between German breweries and bakeries because they both use many of the same ingredients in making their products - water, grains and yeast. Now the pandemic has brought some breweries and bakeries back together again.
"The brewery sent 6,000 liters of its beer to local bakeries and invited them to create their own bread recipes using beer instead of water. They also sent leftover grains from the brewing process, which the bakeries used to create "Treberbrot," or "Spent Grain Bread.
"It would have been such a shame to just toss out such a tasty beer," Peter Koenig, whose family has run the brewery since 1908, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "Then we came up with this idea to bake the bread with the beer, to leave out the water. I think it's great that these two craft industries have come together like this." Trappist Beer Needs Trappist Monks to Brew It, but the Vocation Is Dwindling
Introduction: Let's hope more people decide to take up the faith and become Trappist Monks. Otherwise Trappist beer may go the way of the dinosaurs.
"Exclusive Trappist breweries are facing a supply problem: They’re running out of monks.
"Brothers at the picturesque abbeys are aging, and fewer men are taking vows these days. But in order to be labeled an “Authentic Trappist Product”—which commands a price premium as well as historical cachet—real monks need to be involved." © 2021 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Germany's COVID management: World wonders what's gone wrong
Introduction: This article deviates from articles we've shared in the past but it's directly tied to our business - leading beer tours in Germany - and everyone's desire to return to normal with respect to travel. Like you, we're very anxious to get back over to Germany again, but unfortunately 2022 is looking like a more realistic timeframe. Please follow official guidance on best practices for socializing and we'll all get out of this sooner. Thanks!

2020 was a disaster for Germany’s breweries
Introduction: As the title of this article implies, last year was tough on everybody including German breweries that date back at least as far as the year 1040. These breweries have survived numerous past crises including pandemics, wars, and more. Fingers crossed the industry can bounce back quickly from our current challenges.
"Germans have never drunk so little beer as in 2020. Breweries and beer warehouses had around 5% less revenue than in 2019. Now they are hoping that drinking beer with friends will soon become the norm again." © 2021 Deutsche Welle

Prague’s oldest micobrewery debuts a new brew for the first time in over a hundred years
Introduction: Tradition, as it pertains to many things, is much more important in Europe than here in the U.S. Sometimes tradition gets in the way of positive change, and sometimes holding on to traditions is a good thing. We think it was probably time for Pivovar U Fleků in Prague to come up with a new beer style?
"An era has come to an end. For 177 years, U Fleků, the oldest mini-brewery in the Czech Republic, has made just one kind of beer — a 13 degree dark. For this year’s St Wenceslas Day festivities, the pub is introducing a light lager.
"For historical perspective, Britain's Queen Victoria took the throne 183 years ago, the first postage stamps were issued 180 years ago, and the first telegram was sent 179 years ago.
"The downturn in tourism due to the coronavirus pandemic has caused the pub, which opened in 1499, to try to attract more local people. But dark beer is unpopular with Czechs. Dark and semi-dark beers take up less than 4% of the market.
"To meet local preferences, U Fleků is introducing a 13 degree light-colored beer lager called St Wenceslas Light Lager (Svatováclavský světlý ležák)." © 2001 - 2020 Howlings s.r.o. All rights reserved.

Rauchbier Is the Best Fall Beer
Introduction: Rauchbier (smoked beer) is one of our favorite beer styles, especially for Fall and Winter, but it definitely is a unique taste that some people find off-putting. But if you follow the advice of Bill Wesselink (see below) you may just become hooked.
"The style, which translates to “smoke beer” from German, reaches back to the origins of our favorite beverage. Millenia ago, barley and other grains used to make beer were dried over a fire before they met hot water and were eventually fermented into a boozy cereal that became beer. In effect, all beer was smoke beer.
"Today, two original rauchbier breweries remain in Bamberg, Spezial and Schlenkerla, and only the latter exports.
"The first time I had real smoked beer was in Bamberg,” says Bill Wesselink, co-founder of Chicago’s Dovetail Brewery, which regularly produces four rauch variations. “It was a beer outside the bounds of everything I’d had. At first sip the smoke was accosting. Nine pints later, I was a fan.” ©2020 Hearst Magazine Media, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The Beer Types of the World [Chart]
Introduction: Attention beer geeks around the world! This article provides an interesting look at more than 100 different unique beer styles that are brewed around the world along with their respective origins.
"There are so many ways to categorize beer: by color, by yeast type, by prominent flavor, or even by popularity of the style. But, much like wine, distinct styles of beer are typically developed by region, and the raw materials most readily available in that region.
"Beer is different. For starters, almost all beer recipes are based on two-row or six-row barley, two types of grain that display similar, though not identical, flavor wherever they are grown. For this reason, beer styles developed regionally for reasons other than the distinction of the base ingredient. These reasons were many: Weather affected a brewer’s ability to lager beer; natural water chemistry and qualities like “hardness” dictated if pale or dark malt could be successfully brewed with; hops grew abundantly and were used in equal measure, or else they were imported and, therefore, used sparingly. Finally, the wild yeast of the region determined if the finished beer would display expressive fermentation character. or the flavors of its base ingredients." Copyright © 2014-2020 VinePair Inc.

OFF THE BEATEN BEER PATH NEAR MUNICH
Introduction: Bavaria is a great place to visit if you like beer. And when most people visit Bavaria, the highlight of their trip is drinking a few too many at the Hofbräuhaus in central Munich and singing along with the oompah band. But there is so much more to experience, whether you love beer or not, and the area south of Munich in the foothills of the Alps is one of those places you should find the time to experience!
"Munich has it all for the beer drinker. And if that’s not enough, breweries like Ayinger, Kloster Andechs, and Weihenstephan fan out at various points along Munich’s regional train network. But there’s even more beer bliss in store for the intrepid beer traveler willing to journey further afield. This cluster of historic beer towns, aristocratic breweries, and monastery beer gardens is a short trip away in Upper Bavaria. You can combine a few of these as day trips from Munich, or base yourself in Bad Tölz for some relaxing small-town charm in the foothills of the Alps." Copyright © 2013-2020 A Tempest in a Tankard.

10 beautiful beer gardens in Germany
Introduction: If you're missing summer travel as much as we are, you'll enjoy glancing at some of the beautiful beer gardens of Germany. The Hirschgarten in Munich, with 8,000 seats is the largest beer garden in Germany and always one of our favorites. It doesn't hurt that they serve beer from Augustiner Bräu!
"You get the beer yourself and you're allowed to bring your own snack. What would be unacceptable in other pubs is a tradition in Bavarian beer gardens, like the Königlicher Hirschgarten dating from 1790. Some 8,000 seats make it one of the largest beer gardens in the world. While you must wear a face mask in the extensive park, you can take it off when seated at the beer garden table. Cheers!" German brewery wins coveted 'Munich' status for first time in a century
Introduction: This is very big news is you're Giesinger Bräu or if you're a Münchener. For the first time in a century another brewery has been granted status as a "Munich Brewery". This means that the brewery actually brews within the Munich city limits and it grants the brewery - Giesinger in this case - the right to host a tent at the annual Oktoberfest extravaganza!
"Founded in a garage in 2006 and initially financed by crowdfunding, the Giesinger brewery now draws water from a spring in the city and brews beer within its walls – the criteria required for an official Munich brewery.
"To claim the status, last awarded at the end of the 19th century, the company had to drill a 150-metre (500-feet) deep well to access the special spring water.
"Only six other brewers have the lofty title, which gives them permission to use classic brew names such as "Münchner Hell": Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbraü, Löwenbräu , Paulaner and Spaten." Copyright © 2020 The Local Europe AB. All Rights Reserved.

Eisbock: The Legendary Beer Style Discovered By Accident
Introduction: This story is obviously not true, but something like it is certainly believable. Today, our favorite Eisbock is Aventinus Eisbock (12% ABV, 15 IBU) from Schneider Weisse in Kelheim, Germany. By the way, any Eisbock makes an excellent "dessert beer" after a hearty meal!
"Today, Eisbock may be one of the rarest beer styles around due to the expense and effort that goes into producing it. This style is also rarely found in the U.S. because of alcohol laws that put freeze distillation or fractional freezing in the same category as other forms of distillation. Copyright © 2020 Build.com

“Streets as Stages” — The Munich Beer Riots of 1844
Introduction: An interesting slice of Munich history, naturally tied to beer which was and still is a staple of Bavarian life.
"In early May 1844, thousands of Munich’s soldiers and working-class laborers rioted for three days after the government raised the Biersatz from six to six-and-a-half kreuzer per Maß (about one liter). 33 breweries were severely damaged, as well as government buildings, local bakeries, and butchers. Munich’s unrest reverberated across time and space—sympathetic riots took place throughout Bavaria in the following weeks, and authorities labored for years to prevent further violence. These tensions even fed into Bavaria’s attempted democratic revolution of 1848." Copyright © 2020 Good Beer Hunting

Drinking beer could improve your concentration and reduce risk of dementia, study claims
Introduction: We've always felt that beer, in moderation, is good for ones health, but we've never consider the possible benefits to the brain. The "magic" ingredient is thought to be the hops which. So perhaps a beer a day is not such a bad motto to live by?

"And perhaps surprisingly, those who took supplements containing bitter hop extracts, displayed better memory recall and were better able to solve mental puzzles.

Franconian Beer Kellers: A lesson in German Gemütlichkeit
Introduction: Franconia, and particularly the sub-region known as Upper Franconia is home to the most breweries per capita in the world. It's also the favorite part of our tours where we spend 2 1/2 days exploring many of the ≈300 breweries, bierkellers and biergartens the region has to offer.
"Nestled in the northwest corner of Bavaria is the region of Franconia. Well known for its beer, this region is actually made up of three individual areas. Together they are home to a total of 300 operating breweries, many of them family owned. In fact, upper Franconia has the highest density of breweries per capita in the world.
"What sets beer Kellers apart from beer gardens is that they are usually built into the hills surrounding the region’s cities and generally the seating is under the shade of the trees. Before refrigeration, brewers benefited from the cold rock and the shade of the trees overhead. Both lowered the temperature considerably in the hot summer months, allowing for cold storage of items that could spoil.
"Since at least 100 years ago, people have been using Kellers not just as storage facilities, but also as places to rest, recharge and socialise. The shade of the trees became a respite from the summer sun, not just for the storage of beer but for drinkers of beer as well." Copyright © 2020 IamExpat Media

Introduction: Dublin is a fun "big city" to visit. The people are mostly very nice and other than some thick accents, English is no problem. On top of that, there's no shortage of great beers to try, including the most famous of all, Guinness.
"A perfect vacation in Ireland includes charming bed and breakfasts, pubs with local fare, and the Dingle Peninsula. You're also going to be spending a lot of time in the beautiful city of Dublin. "When you get to the seventh floor, you'll be at the Gravity Bar, which is on the roof of the building. You'll be able to enjoy a pint of Guinness, which is the perfect ending, and you'll see "360 views of Dublin," according to a Trip Advisor review. Copyright © 2020 www.thetravel.com

SCHNEIDER WEISSE: WHEAT BEER BETWEEN TRADITION AND INNOVATION
Introduction: This is a great article about our favorite wheat beer brewery - Schneider Weisse - in Kelheim, Germany. If this peaks your interest and want to a little tasting, we suggest (in order) Schneider Original (Tap 7), Festweisse (Tap 4), Aventinus (Tap 6) and Hopfenweisse (Tap 5).
"A journey to Kehlheim in eastern Bavaria is a journey to wheat beer nirvana.
"To begin with, the brewery has brewed nothing but wheat beers since its founding in 1872. What’s more, Georg Schneider I purchased the privilege of brewing Weissbier from King Ludwig II.
"Maximillian quickly set about adding to his empire of wheat beer breweries, including one in Kehlheim built in 1607 (current home of Schneider Weisse).
Like his ancestors, Georg VI takes Schneider Weisse’s history and tradition seriously. Open fermentation is not a thing of the past, nor is secondary fermentation in the bottle with Speise (wort used for priming)." © Copyright © 2013-2020 A Tempest in a Tankard

Beer here? Germans call beer 'liquid bread,' so why not try it in solid loaf?
Introduction: Give this a spin if you enjoy fresh baked bread and haven't tried making Beer Bread. It's about as simple as it gets and it's delicious! We use wheat beer in ours, but any beer will do.
"Always wanting to try out a beer bread recipe, I rose to the occasion when I learned in the Observer-Reporter’s daily morning Zoom conference call that a co-worker was writing about yeast shortages.
"Online recipes refer to beer loaves as a “quick bread,” and this was the quickest ever: no bananas to peel and mash, no apricots to snip, no blueberries to wash, no dates to soak, no nuts to chop, as required by other tried-and-true ventures in “Quick Bread Land,” the recipes for which require no yeast and therefore, no rising time outside the oven.
"While baking, the bread produced a slightly yeasty aroma. Hot-from-the-oven bread is so enticing, that I couldn’t resist an almost immediate taste test once the loaf could be handled." © Copyright 2020 Herald-Standard,

Coronavirus closes down 400-year-old German brewery
Introduction: Not life or death like many people are struggling with, but certainly a sad story. Wernecker brewed their first beer in 1617... and their last in 2020.
"Businesses large and small are feeling the impact of lockdowns, and Germany's world-famous breweries are no exception. In Bavaria, the Wernecker brewery, which traces its history back more than four centuries, has been forced to shut its taps for good." © 2020 Deutsche Welle

Brews News: What's a vacation without beer?
Introduction: Have to say we feel the same way!
"I love the idea of a brewcation,” said Sam Smith of Toboggan Brewing in London. “It’s very difficult to pick one region for beer tourism, but I have always been drawn to the beers of Southern Germany, made in the traditional Bavarian style."
“For me, it would definitely be Germany . . . , probably Munich,” (brewmaster Gaven) Anderson (of Anderson Craft Ales) said. “I would love to check out Hofbrau and Spaten breweries and all the small independent ones I haven’t heard of yet. I would start with a nice malty marzen or a festbier and then every other beer I can get my hands on.” © 2020 Postmedia Network Inc. All rights reserved.

Czechs love their beer
Introduction: The town of Pilsen in the Czech Republic is the birthplace of the Pilsener style of lager, which is typically lighter in color and less sweet that it's cousin, the Munich lager. And Pilsner Urquell is the brewery that brewery that "invented" Pilsner back in the mid-1800's. If your travels take you to or near Pilsen, we highly recommend taking the Pilsner Urquell brewery tour so you can visit their enormous under ground cellars and taste their Pilsner as it was original served, unfiltered.
"The tour lasted 90 minutes, up and down winding staircases and into the cold, wet cellar where the yeasty mix cools. My sturdy-soled shoes came in handy on the moist floor. The tour climaxed with a worker giving us all a freshly filled glass." ©2020 Hearst

German beer
Introduction: Good intro to German beer and beer culture. I favor the beers from southern Germany (Bavaria) over those from up north, but that's what's great about beer... there's something for everybody! Three of my favorite breweries are mentioned in this article: Aecht Schlenkerla (founded 1405), Schneider Weisse (founded 1872), and Weihenstephan (founded 1040),
"Although the Germans did not invent beer, the country holds the alcoholic beverage in very high esteem, as made evident by the German Beer Purity Law. With more than 1.300 breweries producing over 5.500 different types of beer, it should come as no surprise that the glowing nectar is the country's national drink and consuming it is a vital part of the culture.
"The Germans take their beer very seriously and even have a special word for it, Bierernst, which means deadly serious and literally translates as "beer serious." © 2019 IamExpat Media. All rights reserved.

Why Ireland’s Pub Owners Have Long Moonlighted as Undertakers
Introduction: There's not much to add to this story! This is certainly something I never would have thought existed but when you consider it carefully, it does seem to be a case of very complimentary products?
"Jasper McCarthy, the fifth-generation owner of the pub that carries his family’s name, pulled his first pint at the age of 10 and buried his first body three years later. For nearly two centuries, the McCarthy family has been serving Irish spirits in Fethard, a quaint village in County Tipperary fortified by a 13th-century stone wall. A hearse is now parked in the old livery stable out back, but otherwise little has changed at McCarthy’s Pub, Restaurant, and Undertakers since it was founded in 1840 by Michael McCarthy, Jasper’s great-great-grandfather." © 2019 Atlas Obscura. Oktoberfest 2019: Photos From the Opening Weekend
Introduction: 2nd weekend of Oktoberfest München is underway (currently 6:00PM Central European Time on Friday, Sept. 27th) and no doubt there's loads of fun to be had. Even if you say you don't want to drink that much beer or deal that many people, I'd say it's a bucket-list item. Nothing like it in the world... kind of like the beer/fun/cultural equivalent of the Grand Canyon or Yosemite. Prost!
"Over the weekend, the 186th Oktoberfest beer festival opened in Munich, Germany. Once again, organizers are expecting about 6 million visitors over the next two weeks—the last keg will be tapped on October 6. In 2019, the average price one can expect to pay for a one-liter mug of Oktoberfest beer is 11.80 euros ($12.99). From small to large: All Oktoberfest tents
Introduction: Bucket List Alert! The most impressive party in the world - Oktoberfest München 2019 - kicks off tomorrow (Sept. 21st) at Noon local time. If you've never been, and if you like beer, you owe it to yourself to get over there at least once in your lifetime. O’zapft is! Prost!
"There’s no Wiesn without the Schottenhamel-Festhalle, because this is where Oktoberfest is officially opened every year with a tap. At noon on the first day of Wiesn, the mayor of Munich taps the first barrel of beer with as few strokes as possible. “It’s tapped! To a peaceful Wiesn!” Only then may the other tents start pouring."
"The Hofbräu-Festzelt isn’t just the largest festival hall on the Wiesn, it’s also the only tent with an area directly in front of the music platform where people can stand (and dance). It offers space for roughly 10,000 Oktoberfest visitors."
"The massive wooden beams of the roof construction in the Hacker Festzelt are ingeniously clad with light blue fabric. In contrast to other tents, where the fabric panels swallow a lot of light, here you actually get the feeling you’re sitting under an open blue sky with white, fleecy clouds. This special atmosphere is one of a kind - it’s probably why the “Hacker” is usually already crowded in the early afternoon." © 2019 Portal München Betriebs-GmbH & Co. KG

Craft beer and beyond: Germany's Schneider Weisse, still crafting wheat ales after 150 years
Introduction: If you think you don't like wheat beer, you owe it to yourself to try the beer from Schneider Weisse - the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria. They've specialized in wheat beer since their inception and it comes through in the beers they produce. All are excellent and worth trying, but I highly recommend trying their Aventinus. It's a wheat doppelbock that clocks in at 8.2% ABV and 16 IBU, and is considered by many (including yours truly) to be the finest in the world!
"The beers that Schneider Weisse offer have orderly names, true to their German roots. Tap7 is the original family recipe from 1872; try that if you want to see what history tastes like. If you’re looking for a low alcohol by volume option, go with Tap11, the light wheat beer. Maybe you’re chilled from working outside on a blustery autumn afternoon (it will be here before we know it): Go with the Tap6 Aventinus, a doppelbock." ©2019 LNP Media Group

Tiny Bubbles — How Nitrogenation Changed Beer Forever
Introduction: Nitro may be trendy in the craft beer world today, but there was a real reason the folks at Guinness invented nitrogenation way back when.
"The fact that nitrogen-dispensed beer has become a major part of contemporary craft is especially surprising when you consider that nitrogen dispense, or “nitrogenation,” was invented just 60 years ago by Michael Ash, a young Cambridge mathematics graduate working at Guinness’ Park Royal Brewery in London.
"Initially, he enlisted two of his team members to help him on a side project that some of his colleagues sarcastically dubbed “Daft Guinness.” Their solution—nitrogen—was literally commonplace, employing the most common gas on Earth, and one which, it was thought, wouldn’t affect the taste of the beer. By September of 1957, Ash had developed his first prototype for a two-chamber cask. One part held beer, while the other section stored a mix of nitrogen and other gasses. Guinness received a patent on the two-chamber cask in 1958, and the fourth iteration of Ash’s cask, known internally as Mark IV, launched in test markets in June of 1958. It was called the Easy Serve cask, and following its initial success it was widely launched in time for the brewery’s bicentennial celebrations in 1959." All content ©2018 Good Beer Hunting

Ask Kate About Beer: What’s kellerbier?
Introduction: Kellerbier happens to be one of my favorite beer styles, in particular those that are unfiltered, or "Ungespundet" as my German friends say it. For my taste buds, the particles left in an unfiltered beer provide more body and more depth of taste. This is just one reason why we spend 3 nights in Bamberg, which is in the heart of the region of Franconia in northern Bavaria.
"Kellerbiers are, you guessed it, of German origin, specifically from the southern region called Franconia. Keller just means “cellar,” and referred to the underground storage caves where, prior to refrigeration, townspeople kept their beer cool.
"He says that in Germany there’s just one requirement to label a beer kellerbier, and it’s that the beer be unfiltered. Much of the beer consumed around the world is filtered to remove tiny particles left over from the brewing process. But more rustic, traditional styles like kellerbier often forgo filtration, which gives the beer a lightly hazy appearance.
“Outside Franconia, kellerbier has come to mean shorthand for unfiltered lager,” Stange says." © 2019 Onion, Inc.

CZECH BREWERY ROLLS OUT FIRST WASTEWATER BEER
Introduction: At first glance this sounds pretty disgusting, but if you go back several hundred years, most beer was made with water taken from rivers and streams (sewers of the time) that were polluted with human waste. What made beer safe to drink was the fact that the water was boiled and fermented. I'd like to think the same concept applies to this beer, but what we have today are all of the pharmaceuticals (e.g., pain killers, antibiotics, viagra and birth control, etc.) that weren't around in the old days. Sure hope those are somehow extracted from the waste water.
“We wanted to prove that by using the most appropriate membrane methods we can meet the strict norms set by the health authorities. This is evidence that we are able to make potable water out of wastewater.”
“But if you have a label on a product saying that it was made from recycled water, it puts some people off. We decided to go for beer because as you probably know, Czechs are the biggest European producers of beer. Therefore we aimed at beer, instead of water.” © 1996–2019 Český rozhlas

WWII vet Schroeder recalls liberating German brewery
Introduction: Every so often I'm reminded of how popular beer is with so many people. And I can just imagine how happy Warrant Officer Earl Schroeder, and his men, must have been when they "liberated" that German brewery back in 1945. Imagine after surviving an experience as horrible as WWII and then coming across some fresh, German beer!
"At one point during the war, and as part of the 1251st Combat Engineer Troop, Warrant Officer Schroeder and his colleagues were able to “locate, recognize and liberate” a brewery/distillery in Monchengladbach, about 10 miles west of Düsseldorf.
"Pulling rank, Schroeder was able to fill five beer barrels and 100 five-gallon gas cans for his division before allowing the others to fill their canteens, helmets and other items with the liquid gold." Copyright © 2006-2019 Gatehouse Media LLC. All Rights Reserved

Essential Terms To Know For The Beginner Craft Beer Enthusiast
Introduction: For the most part, the terms described in this article represent "Beer 101". Yet there is some interesting information in here for even a more seasoned beer lover. The "worst" word to learn about in here is "adjunct" which basically means all of the junk (i.e., corn or rice syrup) big beer makers put into their beer to make it more appealing to the masses.
"Okay, we’re getting into a little more specific territory here. Adjunct is a world that’s very important to “macro” beers. That is, the beers most of us drink, by far. Beers made on a major scale (macro) often use “adjuncts” in their wort.
"An adjunct is usually corn or rice syrup added after the beer is made. In essence, this makes the beer lighter, sweeter, and easier to drink. Think an ice-cold Corona on a very hot summer day. There’s that clear layer of corn sweetness on the back end there. That’s because Corona uses corn as an adjunct (corn has become an essential flavor associated with “Mexican Lagers”)." There’s that clear layer of corn sweetness on the back end there. That’s because Corona uses corn as an adjunct (corn has become an essential flavor associated with “Mexican Lagers”)." How to store and drink craft beer
Introduction: I've had numerous conversations with beer "experts" about the merits of aging beer. In general, aging high ABV beers like Barrel-Aged Stouts, German Doppelbocks, Belgian Tripels and Imperial/Double IPAs is not only reasonable but often improves the flavor of the beer. But with lighter "octane" beers like IPAs, lagers, pilsners, sours, etc., it's a different story all together.
"Craft beer has a growing following in many countries, and now the hoppy beverage has inspired researchers at the Leibniz-Institute for Food Systems Biology at the Technical University of Munich (Leibniz-LSB at TUM) in Germany.
"They found a decrease to 59 and 67% in the filtered and unfiltered beers after 3 months of cold storage, while the hoppiness dropped to about a third of its original strength after 3 months of warmer storage
"Anyone who prefers a beer with a strong hop aroma should not store craft beer for long." Copyright © 2019 Narrative Content Group. All Rights Reserved

Irish workers granted 14 pints of beer a day in the 16th century, research reveals
Introduction: Today we think in terms of minimum wages and benefits like medical insurance. But years ago when worker benefits were far less or even non-existent, the powers that be came up with a way to feed, motivate and pacify workers all at the same time.
"Evidence suggests that vast amounts of both ale and beer were consumed with the purpose of using it as a source of energy needed for a busy working day. "Not only calorific, with one pint containing up to a massive 500 calories, but the beers were by no means low in alcohol.
"“It has been estimated, however, that most beer at this time would have had an alcohol strength of between 7% and 10% if they used similar quantities of yeast as they do today.” © Copyright 2019 - Ireland Before You Die

Drinking Bacon: In Defense of Smoking Beer Slow & Low
Introduction: Yet another article about one of my favorite beer styles - smoked beer. Did you know that ALL beer had a strong smoked flavor until the invention of the indirect heating kiln in the mid-17th century? That's why you should give it a try... and if you do, please don't stop after the first couple sips. Eventually you're pallet will get used to the flavor, and you too may fall in love with it!
"Rauchbier, as the Germans call it in their determinedly straightforward manner—it literally translates to “smoke beer” —is a classic. Indeed, at some point in the past, almost all beers would have been somewhat smoky because of the need for wood fires to dry the malt before brewing.

KNOW YOUR CRAFT: For something really different try Schlenkerla’s Helles Lager
Introduction: Back to one of my absolute favorite breweries in the world - Schlenkerla. The Helles described in this article isn't my favorite, but this might be a good one for the uninitiated to try first. Smoked beer (rauchbier) isn't for everyone, but if you find the Helles interesting. I suggest you try their Weizen (smoked wheat beer) and their Eiche (smoked doppelbock). Heaven here on earth!
"With so many beer aficionados hellbent on trying something new every time they tip one back, it can be a challenge trudging through a seemingly infinite array of mucky IPAs to find a brew that is truly different.
Enter Brauerei Heller-Trum or Schlenkerla. Brewery Schlenkerla is a place you may have heard me reference before, as their Rauchbiers, or smoked beer, is about as unique as it gets. But, whether you enjoy the style or not may depend on your palate." (c) 2006-2019 Gatehouse Media LLC. All rights reserved.

These 17th century monks did a beer fast for Lent
Introduction: Today, Starkbierfest season and am excuse to drink a bunch of strong beer. But the tradition started back in the 1600's when Benedictine Monks in Munich thought to brew an extra strong beer to help them get through the fasting period of Lent (always around 40 days). They could only drink liquids and starkbier contained a lot of carbs from the extra grains used to brew it. I love starkbier but, based on this article, I also like the idea of trying this fast.
"J. Wilson, a Christian working as an editor for a county newspaper in Iowa, partnered with a local brewery and brewed a special doppelbock that he consumed over 46 days during Lent, eating no solid food.
"Wilson noted that he was acutely hungry for the first several days of his fast, but “my body then switched gears, replaced hunger with focus, and I found myself operating in a tunnel of clarity unlike anything I’d ever experienced.” He ended up losing over 25 pounds over the course of the Lenten season, but learned to practice “self-discipline.”' Copyright © 2006-2019, Pilot Media Group All rights reserved

Starkbierfest 2019 Munich Guide: Where to Go, What to Drink & How to Celebrate
Introduction: One of my favorite times of year, Starkbierfest season is upon us which means it's time to pick up your favorite starkbier (strong, dark beer) and toast to the Salvatorian Monks who came up with the idea that it's OK to drink beer during lent when they were not allowed to eat any food. A higher amount of grains are used to brew starkbier (think doppelbocks, stouts, etc.) and the result is very malty tasting beer that's higher in alcohol than regular beers (typically 7.00 - 9.00% ABV), And more malt means more calories. So starkbier not only provided sustenance to the monks, it also helped them get closer to God!
"And while I could rave about all the beautiful buildings, green spaces and abundance of awesome things to do, I think what I have learned to love most about Munich is that there is always (yes, always) an excellent justification to drink.
"Sandwiched between Carnival celebrations and Easter, Starkbierfest is Munich’s Lent-time justification for alcohol consumption.

Know your Brew: Russian Imperial Stout
Introduction: Whenever I ask someone about the difference between porters and stouts, I always get a different answer which is generally not super convincing. This article, assuming it's accurate, may finally answer that question?
"Our story of Russian Imperial Stout starts somewhere in 18th-century England. The beer of choice was porter: a smoky, somewhat acrid ale brewed with less than desirable brown malt. Close to follow were “stout porters,” so-called for their higher alcohol content. Then stout dropped the porter, moved to Ireland, changed considerably and came back to merry old London town as a much more drinkable beer." © Copyright 2019 Boulder Weekly

Paleolithic Ale? Scientists Discover Evidence of the First British Beer
Introduction: It is believed that the Romans introduced the rest of Europe to beer after having learned about it from the Egyptians and/or the Mesopotamians. Now there's archeological proof that brewing in England dates back at least 2,000 years to the time when the Romans occupied southern, Britain.
“'It’s quite unique,” said Lara González Carretero, an archaeobotanist. “We didn’t have any evidence like this in the UK until now. Beer is very old but we didn’t have physical evidence of it.'
Other discoveries made during this project include the remains of a medieval village, a comb made from deer antlers (chic!), Roman coins, and the fossil of a woolly mammoth that could be more than 130,000 years old. But the evidence of Iron Age beer is the most recent finding, and it points out that ancient civilizations also liked to imbibe a brew now and then." © Copyright 2019 Robb Report Media, LLC,

German brewers experiment with hemp beer
Introduction: Did you know that cannabis and hops share many chemical characteristics including those related to flavor and scent? Hemp beer definitely won't get you higher than normal beer, but it should open up many new possibilities for brewers!
"A craft beer boom in Germany, combined with increasingly lenient regulations on cannabis farming, means hemp beer is becoming a popular product with many brewers. But any beer fans hoping for a legal high might be disappointed.

Beer-brewing Trappist monks put faith in plants to reduce water waste
Introduction: Like many people, I'm very interested in innovative approaches to reducing human impact on our planet. The Koningshoeven Abbey is a monastery of the Trappists founded in 1881 in Berkel-Enschot in North Brabant, the Netherlands. Hats off to these monks!
"Koningshoeven Abbey is one of only 13 places in the world to brew Trappist beer, and its products have won over drinkers around the world. For all the commercial success, however, a nagging sense that money has triumphed over spirituality has prompted the monks to rethink their use of water after more than 130 years.

About 1/4 Of U.S. Breweries Join Sierra Nevada's Camp Fire Fundraising Effort
Introduction: I think a lot of people, including myself, were aware of Sierra Nevada's efforts to help the Camp Fire victims with the release of Resilience Butte County Proud IPA. What I wasn't aware of was the actual number of U.S. craft breweries who jumped in to help the cause by brewing the same recipe and donating 100% of proceeds to help those who lost their homes, possessions, etc. Kudos to Ken Grossman for organizing this effort and to the 1,400 other breweries that are supporting the cause!
"Chico, California, is just one town over from Paradise, where the Camp Fire devastated residents, destroyed more than 13,000 homes and killed at least 86 people.

6 Beers You Should Never Drink Again
Introduction: I never really thought of this before, but it appears we really are in the dark with respect to the ingredients used to brew our favorite beers, at least here in the U.S. Maybe it's time we adopt some form of beer purity law like the German Purity Law of 1516 (Reinheitsgebot)? I can only hope that smaller, independent breweries use only pure, non-GMO ingredients.
"Most people don’t bother to go looking for an ingredient list on a beer bottle, labels are limited to name, logo and maybe alcoholic percentages. You’ll rarely find any more information than that, and if you try to inquire about these details from breweries, you’re likely to be ignored or even get a flat out denial." Introduction: I could be wrong, but how good can pot beer made by companies like Heineken, Bud and Corona be? That said, the people who will drink this probably aren't super concerned with taste!
"The world's major alcohol producers can no longer ignore the pot phenomenon, as young consumers may increasingly swap beer and cocktails for joints and cannabis-infused drinks. Some have decisively seized the moment. Constellation Brands, maker of Corona beer and Svedka vodka, has poured $4 billion into the Canadian marijuana firm Canopy Growth. The coming market is "potentially one of the most significant global growth opportunities of the next decade," said Constellation Chief Executive Robert Sands." © 2018 AFP

France has (finally) discovered craft beer. There's even one called 'La Guillotine'
Introduction: The rest of the world is catching up with the U.S. in the craft beer arena. And in some cases, like Italy, they've caught up and even surpassed us. Regardless, if you're a beer lover and if you're traveling overseas, particularly in Europe, you won't be disappointed with the availability of good craft beer to try.
“It’s a real beer BOOM,” he (Nicolas Nougarede) said, giving the word extra emphasis. “Beer has found its place at the table in France again.” After declining for 36 consecutive years, the amount of beer consumed in France has grown about 3% annually each of the last four years, according to the Brewers Assn. of France. 50 epic photos from Oktoberfest prove it's one of the most misunderstood celebrations in the world
Introduction: My favorite time of year is made even more special each year with the kick-off of Oktoberfest München which kicks off tomorrow (9/22) at 11:00 Munich Time. If you've never been, this definitely belongs on your bucket list. If you have been, then you know what I'm talking about! :-)
"When you think of Oktoberfest, you're probably thinking about three things: Germany, lederhosen, and beer.
Whether you've actually been in Munich for the festivities or taken part elsewhere around the world, you know it's essentially one giant party. It's also been commercialized over the years with lederhosen and dirndl Halloween costumes and Oktoberfest-inspired craft beers. But there's a whole lot more to the festive celebration than you might think. These epic photos will show you just what we're talking about." Copyright © 2018 Insider Inc. All rights reserved.

An ancient thirst for beer may have inspired agriculture, Stanford archaeologists say
Introduction: This is a pretty intriguing discovery, which if accurate will push back the timeframe for the first beer production by 5,000 to 8,000 years to 13,000 BC. Being a modern day beer-lover, I can easily understand why, once beer was "discovered", humans would want to recreate and fine-tune the process of brewing beer.
"Evidence suggests that thousands of years ago, the Natufian people, a group of hunter-gatherers in the eastern Mediterranean, were quite the beer connoisseurs. Liu and her research team analyzed residues from 13,000-year-old stone mortars found in the Raqefet Cave, a Natufian graveyard site located near what is now Haifa, Israel, and discovered evidence of an extensive beer-brewing operation. 'This accounts for the oldest record of man-made alcohol in the world,' Liu said." © Stanford University, Stanford, California 94305.

Pubs still closing at a rate of around 18 per week
Introduction: This is a real unfortunate trend. The taxes pub owners face, which increases the price of beer, is causing more people to stay home and for pubs to close. This could be the end of an era?
"Camra’s chairman Jackie Parker said the findings painted a “dismal picture” for pubs, adding: “As taxes continue to rise, more people are choosing to drink at home and as a consequence, pubs are closing down. It’s a vicious cycle. Pub closures make us all poorer by reducing overall tax revenues raised by the pub sector and weakening community life in areas where valued pubs close." © Copyright 2018, Herald & Times Group ~ All Rights Reserved

The world's oldest beer-brewing abbey is taking up production again
Introduction: Many reasons to visit this place to visit in Italy on your next trip! In addition to the historical significance mentioned below, Montecassino Abbey was the site of a historic battle in WWII with the Allies finally knocking the German army out their well-defending position by almost completely destroying the abbey with bombing. Salute!

134 of the Best Pilsners, Blind-Tasted and Ranked
Introduction: There's a beer for every season, and summer time is the time for pilsners and other refreshing beers. I was a bit surprised at the lack of Czech and German Pilsners on this list, but I attribute that to the organizer's lack of knowledge of the better pilsners of central Europe. Along those lines, if you're interested in trying one of the best that Germany has to offer, try my favorite, Das Naturtrübe from Schwaben Bräu in Stuttgart. It's an unfiltered and "natural" (their words) pilsner that has a nice balance of flavor and lightness.
"A word on the concept of “hype” as it applies to pilsner: It basically doesn’t apply. Unlike so many other beer styles, pilsner falls victim to the continued perception, even among those who appreciate them, that even the best pilsner is “just a pilsner.” As a result, there are maybe only a handful of beers in the entire pilsner world that would qualify as “whales” to beer traders." © 2018 Paste Media Group. Introduction: Back in the old days (we're talking 1981 here) the selection of good beer was pretty sparse. Even if you're not a regular, the ability to connect and bond with other people, including strangers, is one of the most satisfying things about visiting a Bavarian brewery house.
"The culture of having a regulars' table must be preserved, because it gives people the opportunity to get into conversation with each other," say the members of the regulars' table. Introduction: Strong dark beers, including Belgian Quadrupels are certainly one of my favorite beer styles and make excellent pairings with meals, especially if wine isn't your thing.
"Today, you’ll find traditional Belgian-style quadrupels brewed with a fairly simple grain bill, often consisting of just Pilsner or pale base malts, a couple of darker specialty malts and sometimes with candy sugar. In the case of Trappist monasteries, the yeast is proprietary, and only beers produced there can call itself Trappist." Copyright © 2018 LPN Media Group Lonely All rights reserved.

Desert Cicerone: A Brief History of 7,000 Years of Beer
Introduction: This is a good, short summary of the history of beer. Worth a quick read, especially if you're a beer nerd like me.
"As wine grew to prominence, beer remained the alcoholic drink of the lower classes. In northern Europe, beer reigned—mostly due to climate. Without refrigeration, hot weather sours beer quickly, while in cooler climates, beer can be fermented for much of the year. Therefore, you can imagine a sort of "grape/grain" line dividing Europe latitudinally." Copyright 2012-2018 Coachella Valley Independent LLC

I seriously believe a reasonable amount of beers per week is good for the human body and spirit, both of which may help a person live a longer, more fulfilling life... but perhaps I'm biased? :-)

When a City and a Bishop Went to War Over Beer
Introduction: The title of this article is clever, but beer was serious stuff back in the middle ages.
"It was during this period that tensions over beer began. “Beer was a central component of public life,” says Richard W. Unger, historian at the University of British Columbia and author of Beer in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. “It was the drink of parties, like dinners to celebrate guilds, and of public occasions. Besides, people were certainly getting nutrition from it.” © 2017 Atlas Obscura. All rights reserved.

Baltic porter, perhaps the world’s most unlikely lager
Introduction: I'd never heard of a Baltic Porter prior to coming across this article. Coincidentally, I visited a brewery just a few weeks later that was pouring an English Imperial Baltic Porter called "Heavy Fuel". It had body for sure, but it was also surprisingly light on the palate. I could have kept drinking it all night had it not been for the 10.5% ABV and I highly recommend trying one if you can find it.

10 Things You Should Know About Delirium Tremens
Introduction: As I mentioned in my previous posting, I'm a big fan of strong Belgian beers, and the Delirium series is no exception. My only problem is that I come across articles like this and almost immediately go out and buy the beer only to get home and find that I have 3-4 dozen other beers in my chest freezer waiting to be consumed. Oh well, live is rough, isn't it?

Give In to the Dark Side of Belgian Beer
Introduction: I'm a big fan of "dark" beers like Belgian quads, German dopplebocks and barrel-aged stouts, particularly during the cold winter months. In fact. at Thanksgiving and Christmas, I usually will serve these beer styles at our dinner table right along side various red wines. If you like wine but haven't tried a dark beer, it's worth looking around for an affordable, quality beer. You can't go wrong with Chimay Grande Réserve (Blue) if you're looking for a place to start.

5 Beers You’ll Want to Drink on Thanksgiving Day
Introduction: For many reasons, I love the Thanksgiving holiday more than any other on the calendar, not the least of which is the ability to get together with loved ones and enjoy the day eating, drinking and conversing. Thanksgiving seems to be the one holiday that evokes the feeling that Germans call "gemütlichkeit" which roughly translates to coziness, contentedness, comfort and relaxation). And for me, part of that feeling comes from trying new and different beers that are particularly good in colder climates. This article offers several suggestions for your enjoyment... Happy Thanksgiving 2017!
"For most, Thanksgiving is a heady mix of relaxation and stress with uptime and downtime, socializing and food prep, a big parade, televised sports, and marathon food consumption followed by a tryptophan-induced food coma. GUINNESS’S AMERICAN BREWERY TAPROOM OPENS ON FRIDAY
Introduction: It's great to see Guinness, which was founded in 1759, come to America, especially after they tried it once before - back in 1949 - failed. They've been creatively expanding on their offerings over in Dublin, and it will be fun to be able to try some of the newer creations, plus some brand new, made for America only experiments. I really hope they expand distribution into other cities across the country.

A success story: 175 years of pilsner beer
Introduction: If you're looking for a very refreshing beer, try a Pilsner.. What is most surprising (to me) about this article is the popularity of pilsner style beers around the world. Pilsner Urquell is definitely a quality pilsner, but for a change-up, see if you can find an unfiltered pilsner. Most that I'm aware of come from Germany and my two favorites are the Unfiltered Pilsner from Mahr's Bräu in Bamberg, and the Schwaben Bräu Das Naturtrübe from Dinkelacker-Schwaben Bräu in Stuttgart.

Bayern forgets Bundesliga troubles with beer at Oktoberfest
Introduction: This article highlights the need of everyone to take a breather from work, family or whatever may be causing stress in your life. Vacations are wonderful for doing this, but a cold beer can have a similar effect, albeit shorter and unhealthy if taken to the extreme. I'm not a doctor, but I think having a good beer (or glass of wine) can help definitely help a person live longer and be more productive and/or effective once they return back to the reality that was causing the stress.

Introduction: Perhaps this article contains nothing new to you, but I think it's always good to keep up on the latest science about drinking. This is particularly true because drinking can have both positive and negative affect on one's health.

10 very German passions
Introduction: As we all know (now more than ever) it's not good to stereotype any person or group. And it would be easy to write a similar article about any country including the U.S. But having visited Germany 20+ times, I can attest to most of the cultural habits described in this article, and that's what makes the Germans so "lovable"!
"Still, even if not all Germans are obsessed with the TV show "Tatort," garden plots, "Stammtisch" meet-ups and beer, these customs are deeply established in the country's culture and you're bound to encounter them one day or another if you visit or live in Germany." © 2017 Deutsche Welle

DOES MUSIC AFFECT THE TASTE OF BEER?
Introduction: I know how music affects me personally (positively). And I'm pretty sure it's the same for all mammals, but here's a case of using music impacting the yeast used in fermenting beer. This is pretty cool stuff and probably just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how musical vibrations impact everything in our world.

It's not all skinny jeans and hipster beards, the craft beer trade is here to stay
Introduction: This is a very short article, and it's really the headline that caught my eye, but it does reflect the growing sentiment throughout Europe and around the world regarding craft beer. By the way, "grá" is a Gaelic word meaning "love".

Good Friday alcohol sales ban to be abolished
Introduction: It amazes me how much the past affects our daily lives today. Here we live in the age of smart-phone instant gratification and yet for the past 90 years, the Irish have had to waste time and energy just trying to enjoy a beer on Good Friday. Couldn't our collective energies be better spent solving world hunger and other important issues?

The best places in Europe for beer lovers
Introduction: "Top 10" lists are always somewhat dubious, but this article is interesting because it highlights a difference between beer variety in Europe and in the U.S. In the U.S. we pretty much have either mass-market beer (e.g., Bud) or craft beer (not counting imported beer). I want to stress this is NOT a knock against craft beers, and several breweries are brewing some really creative beers which I enjoy, but within the craft beer segment, the style choices are often limited to Pale Ale, IPA, Double IPA, Triple IPA, and Stouts & Porters. Many of these beers are excellent, but to me the "PA" segment tends to blend together which narrows the style choices down.
In Europe, most countries have been brewing their own very unique styles of beers for years. For example, Cask Ale, Porter & Stout in the UK., Trappist, Saison & Lambic in Belgium, and Lager, Wheat and Doppelbock in Germany. This likely goes back centuries to when the countries were isolated, both physically and culturally. And the craft beer scene is growing rapidly over there which will expand the choices even further, presumably with each country adding its own twist.
Anyway, if you're planning on visiting Europe, this article will provide "beer for thought" on places to visit. But note that there's only 11 cities mentioned in this article, so I suggest doing some homework before you choose your destinations.

Celebrating beer that's strong enough for German monks
Introduction: A good intro to the Bavarian Starkbier tradition which occurs every year during Lent, plus a walk thru of the world's Top 10 strongest beers (although two of them cheated). To make a "legitimate" beer with these levels of alcohol, the trick is to freeze the beer after it's fermented . This allows the brewer to remove the ice that forms at the top, which leaves a more concentrated concoction of beer ingredients, flavor and alcohol.

25 most important American craft beers ever
Introduction: An interesting read on the beers that shaped the American craft beer scene. Important to note the author focuses on ranking the "most important" beers versus the "best" beers. The later is a matter of personal taste and can be debated ad nauseam, whereas the former makes for a more rational debate.

CRAFTY CASKS Cask beer is making a resurgence in Ireland with traditional festivals bringing us closer to our brewing roots
Introduction: Most people in the U.S. probably never have tasted a cask ale, but conditioning and fermenting naturally in wooden casks is the way they used to do it years ago. A completely different experience than today when most beer is kegged after the initial fermentation and then has gas added to it for carbonation. You may not be able to find a cask beer in your home town, but you can likely find a bottle-conditioned beer (typically from Germany, Belgium or the U.K.) and if so you'll get a sense for the difference.
"Thanks to some passionate craft brewers, however, the cask is slowly being rolled back in from the cold, yet the majority of Irish drinkers aren’t aware of the crucial difference between cask and keg beer." ©News Group Newspapers Limited

Even Beer Snobs Will Love These Mega Brewers' Limited Releases
Introduction: Admittedly, I am a beer snob when it comes to the "AB InBevs" of the world and to most craft brewers. The former typically mass-produce and market beer that's designed to provide a cheap buzz. The later, IMHO, has gone overboard in the use of hops and fruit to try to distinguish themselves in a very crowded craft beer industry (more than 4,000 craft breweries in the U.S. alone). A few craft brewers do stand out to me such as North Coast Brewing Co., Lagunitas and Goose Island Beer Co., and I'm definitely ready to try the brews mentioned in this article... if I can find them?
"There is an understandably strong impulse to write off so-called craft beer when its producer goes from micro to macro. If someone’s beer purchasing is solely a political exercise, this reaction makes sense. If one’s interest in beer drinking, however, is in fearless experimentation and high quality no matter the source, she’d be remiss in overlooking some of the biggest US craft breweries’ limited releases." ©2017 Hospitality Ireland Magazine

Secret to long life: 'beer and broccoli'
Introduction: Gertrude Tomminger of Oregon turned 105 in December. She gives credit for her longevity to a diet that includes beer and broccoli. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and kale have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer, boost your immune system, etc. And beer contains yeast that helps maintain a healthy gut (similar to yogurt). I suspect there's something to Gertrude's claim.

Reclaiming Conversation
Introduction: This week's post is about something more important than beer - human connection. When we're less connected to our smartphones, we tend to engage in real, face-to-face conversations with people from diverse backgrounds. It can be inspiring.

Germany's beer purity law explained
Introduction: Much is made of the German purity law - known as the Reinheitsgebot in Germany - especially because 2016 is the 500th anniversary of this law that was the first consumer protection law ever enacted in the world.
"Five hundred years ago water supplies were often polluted so people drank beer, often in vast quantities, to keep thirst at bay. By ensuring beer contained only high-quality products the law protected the public from poor standard, and potentially lethal, beverages." © Copyright of Telegraph Media Group Limited 2016

A Brief History Of The Munich Starkbier Fest
Introduction: Starkbier is one of my favorite all-time German beer types. Starkbier literally means "strong beer" and it's typically served in Germany around the period of Lent (late winter, early spring). My favorite is Korbinian from Weihenstephaner... worth trying if you ever get a chance.
"The origins of the Starkbier arose out of the dilemma the monks faced during Lent. For a 40-day period, they had to fast and could not consume any food. However, they were allowed to drink. So they decided to create a beer that was rich in nutrients and calories in order to keep the monks satisfied and full during Lent." The Culture Trip Ltd © 2016

The best craft beer bars in Edinburgh
Introduction: I've never met anyone who has anything bad to say about Edinburgh, Scotland and it will likely be the second destination for Original Gravity Tours after Munich. If you like history, scotch, and/or beer it might be worth a visit on your next trip to the British Isles.

"A little history of what Germans drink and why"
Introduction: When most of us think of Germany, we think of liters of beer, pretty women in dirndls and tall men in lederhosen. Although this is not an uncommon site in Bavaria where we lead our German Brewery Tours, the rest of Germany doesn't quite fit this mold.
"A drink is more than just a drink - it's also culture, history and tradition. So why do Germans pick wine over beer? And how come beer used to be healthier than water? DW dips its straw into Germany's favorite beverages." © 2016 Deutsche Welle
